  • Diclofenac is applied to the skin to relieve inflammation and pain of joints and muscles.
  • It is less likely to cause stomach side effects as compared to oral medication.
  • Gently massage it into the skin of the affected area.
  • Do not cover the area being treated with airtight dressings such as bandages as these may increase the risk of side effects.

Wash your hands after applying the gel and if your hands are the treatment side, wait for at least an hour before washing your hands. Patients who are at maximum risk of developing kidney problems include people who are dehydrated, have heart failure, impaired kidney function, hypertension, elderly, who are on medicines which cause excess urination (diuretics), or medicines which have significant impact on kidney function. Hence, for such patients kidney function monitoring is recommended.
