Bos Medicare Surgical 3 Ball Spirometer
A 3-ball breathing lung exerciser, also called a 3-ball incentive spirometer, is a device that can help strengthen respiratory muscles and restore lung capacity. It has three chambers with colour-coded balls that provide a visual incentive to the individual. The balls raise depending on the flow inhaled per second, with different colours indicating different flow rates: 600ml/sec, 900ml/sec, 1200ml/sec.

Directions For Use:
  • Inhale normally and place the mouthpiece between your lips
  • Inhale until the first ball is up, and maintain this position. The second and third balls should remain in their initial position
  • Hold the unit upright
  • Exhale normally
  • Inhale at a rate to raise only the ball in the first chamber
  • Hold your breath for as long as possible
  • Remove the mouthpiece and exhale
  • Repeat the process
  • Rinse your mouth after completing the exercise to avoid infection
To clean a 3-ball spirometer for home use, you can:
  • Detach the mouthpiece from the base of the device
  • Clean it with clean running water and antibacterial soap for about 20 seconds
  • Wash the rest of the spirometer with water and soap

Here are some other tips for using a spirometer:
  • If you have a respiratory infection, do not use your spirometer around other people
  • If you feel lightheaded while using your spirometer, take a break
  • In general, your predicted percentages for FVC and FEV1 should be above 80% and your FEV1/FVC Ratio percentage should be above 70% to be considered normal
