Treosulfan is an alkylating agent. It works by forming cross-links between DNA strands preventing cell replication and leading to the death of the cell.

Expert advice for Treosulfan

  • Inform your doctor if you develop shortness of breath during the treatment with Treosulfan.
  • Use contraceptives, and do not conceive a child (get pregnant) while taking this medicine. Barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms, should be used during therapy and six months after treatment.
  • You may be at risk of infection, so try to avoid crowds or people with colds, and immediately report fever or any other signs of infection to your health care provider.
  • Avoid activities that may cause injury and bleeding during your treatment.
  • Do not receive any kind of immunization or vaccination (especially live vaccines) without your doctor’s approval while taking Treosulfan.
  • To reduce nausea, take anti-nausea medications as prescribed by your doctor, and eat small, frequent meals.
  • Drink more fluids than usual for up to 24 hours after your treatment unless instructed otherwise.
  • Swelling of the gums may occur as a side effect. Frequent mouth rinses, good oral hygiene, and the application of ice may give relief.

Q. Should I avoid any food and drinks while taking Treosulfan?
You can continue with your normal diet unless your doctor tells you otherwise. However, it is advisable to sip water regularly to prevent dehydration, eat small, simple but nourishing snacks every few hours rather than large meals, and suck on hard candy or popsicles to prevent nausea and vomiting.
Q. Why am I experiencing bleeding from my gums after brushing my teeth?
You may experience bleeding from gums due to a drop in the number of platelets (blood cells) in your blood. These blood cells help the blood clot when we bruise ourselves.
Q. How to cope with tiredness and weakness after starting the treatment with Treosulfan?
Various things can help you reduce tiredness and cope with it, for example, gentle exercise. However, always consult your doctor before doing any kind of exercise.

Q. Does Treosulfan cause hair loss?
Yes, while taking this medicine, your hair may become brittle and break. You may also experience patchy hair loss or thinning. These conditions tend to resolve once the treatment is stopped. Be gentle when brushing and washing hair to manage hair loss.
Q. I have noticed some changes in my skin after taking Treosulfan? What should I do?
Use a moisturizer to get relief from rashes, and dry and itchy skin. Avoid direct sunlight, wear protective clothing, and use sunscreen (SPF of more than 15) whenever you step outdoors. Do not go swimming if you have a rash because the chlorine in the water can worsen it. Avoid hot water baths and wear loose and cotton fabric clothes. Your skin will tend to become better once the treatment is stopped.
Q. What should I avoid during my treatment with Treosulfan?
During your treatment, it is advisable to avoid caffeine as it can make you feel dehydrated, avoid fatty fried, spicy, and overly sweet foods, as they may induce nausea, and avoid alcohol and smoking. It is also advisable to avoid crowds or people with colds, as you may be at risk of infection as well as sun exposure to prevent rashes and dry skin. Use caution with sharp objects like razors or nail cutters and avoid activities such as contact sports to lower the chance of getting cut, bruised, or injured.
Q. Can Treosulfan be taken during pregnancy?
This treatment may harm a baby developing in the womb. Therefore, it is important not to conceive or father a child while you are on a treatment with Treosulfan and for at least 6 months after stopping the treatment. Talk to your doctor about effective contraception before starting the treatment.
Q. What are some of the tests conducted before and during the treatment with Treosulfan?
Your doctor will prescribe blood tests to check your levels of blood cells and how well your liver and kidneys are working.
