Selenium Sulphide is an antifungal medication used to control scaling, flaking and itching caused by dandruff. Dandruff is caused by excessive growth of Pityrosporum orbiculare (Malassezia furfur), which is part of normal skin flora. It is also used to treat irregular white or brown patches which occur on the body and sometimes appear after being in the sun (tinea/pityriasis versicolor). Regular application of Selenium Sulphide on the scalp relieves itching and discomfort in people suffering from dandruff.

No, Selenium Sulphide should not be used in kids as the safety with this medicine in the children is yet to be known. Refrain from self-medicating this medication in children or yourself. Always consult your doctor before using Selenium Sulphide.

No, Selenium Sulphide is not an antibacterial agent. It is an antifungal medicine which is used to treat dandruff. Q. How often should I use Selenium Sulphide?
If you are using it to treat dandruff, use it only twice weekly and if you are using it to prevent dandruff, use it once weekly. Do not use Selenium Sulphide more often than directed. However, if not sure, consult your doctor.
Q. How should I apply Selenium Sulphide?
You should first wash your hair or affected area thoroughly with water. Then apply a small amount of Selenium Sulphide on the scalp. Massage properly to form lather. Leave it for 3-5 minutes and then thoroughly rinse it with water. If you have long and thick hair, you can wash with your usual shampoo first and then use Selenium Sulphide.
Q. I have started using Selenium Sulphide. By when can I expect to start seeing the improvements?
The symptoms of the infection, such as itching or soreness, should improve within a few days of treatment. However, signs such as redness and scaling may take longer to disappear. Do not stop applying this medicine before the duration advised by your doctor, even if you feel better.
Q. Can Selenium Sulphide affect vision if it gets into the eye while washing hair?
Be careful while washing your hair and do not let the shampoo get into the eye. However, if it accidentally enters the eye, do not worry and wash your eyes gently with water.
Q. What if someone accidentally swallows Selenium Sulphide?
Selenium Sulphide is meant for external use only and you should use it carefully so that it does not get into the mouth. If you accidentally get Selenium Sulphide in your mouth, wash out your mouth with water. Do not worry, accidental swallowing is normally harmless. But, if you are worried, contact your doctor immediately.
