How nirmatrelvir + ritonavir works

This is a combination of two drugs, nirmatrelvir, a SARS-CoV-2-3CL protease inhibitor and ritonavir, the HIV antiretroviral. Nirmatrelvir blocks the action of SARS-CoV-2-3CL protease enzyme, which is essential for replication of the virus. On the other hand, ritonavir prevents the breakdown of nirmatrelvir.

  • Do not give Nirmatrelvir + Ritonavir to children below 12 years of age or weighing less than 40 kg.

If you miss a dose of Nirmatrelvir+Ritonavir within 8 hours of the usual time, take it as soon as possible and resume the normal dosing schedule. If it is more than 8 hours, do not take the missed dose and instead take the next schedules dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.

Yes. Few patients may be allergic to Nirmatrelvir+Ritonavir, just like any other medicine.
