Melphalan is used in the treatment of multiple myeloma and ovarian cancer.

How melphalan works

Melphalan is an anti-cancer medication. It works by damaging the genetic material (DNA and RNA) of the cancer cells. This stops their growth and multiplication.

Common side effects of melphalan

Nausea, Vomiting, Stomatitis (Inflammation of the mouth), Hair loss, Diarrhea, Infection, Bone marrow suppression, Increased liver enzymes, Decreased white blood cell count (neutrophils), Oral ulcer, Liver toxicity, Hemolytic anemia, Veno-occlusive disease, Muscle atrophy, Skeletal muscle fibrosis, Muscle pain, Increased creatine phosphokinase (CPK) level in blood, Compartment syndrome, Nerve damage, Muscle damage, Skin reaction, Soft tissue reaction, Arterial thrombosis, Delayed healing, Anaphylactic reaction, Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness), Vasculitis, Increased blood urea, Allergic reaction, Pulmonary fibrosis, Maculopapular rash, Interstitial pneumonitis
