Drospirenone is used for contraception. It is used to prevent pregnancy in combination with another medicine.

How drospirenone works

Drospirenone is a progestin (female hormones). It works to prevent pregnancy by preventing the release of an egg from the ovary or preventing fertilization of the egg by sperm (male reproductive cells). It also may work by changing the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent the development of a pregnancy.

Do not take drospirenone, if you or your family has a history of breast cancer; liver disease or gall bladder disease; diabetes; depression; fits; serious inflammation of any part of gastrointestinal tract Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.; hemolytic uremic syndrome (a disorder of blood clotting causing failure of the kidneys); sickle cell anemia (an inherited disease where the red blood cells are abnormal in shape); elevated levels of fat in the blood.
  • Do not take drospirenone, if you are about to undergo surgery, or have been bed-ridden or immobile for a long time; if you have just given birth.
  • Avoid taking drospirenone, if you have an pain and swelling over one or more veins under the skin;varicose veins; systemic lupus erythematosus (disease where the body’s cells are attacked by one’s own immune system, causing joint pain and swelling, fever, skin rash etc.); discoloration of the skin on the face or neck known as “pregnancy patches” (chloasma); hereditary swelling in lips and face (angioedema).
  • Drospirenone has to be taken with ethinyl estradiol starting from Day 2-5 of your menstrual cycle. However, dosage may vary depending on your condition. Please follow the instructions of your doctor, as its correct use is critical.
  • Avoid direct sunlight or ultraviolet light.
  • Do consult a doctor if there is appearance of blood clot in the body characterized by pain, swelling and warmth of affected leg (deep vein thrombosis) or breathlessness, irregular heart beat etc (thrombosis in lungs) .
