Chloramphenicol+Dexamethasone+Phenyl Mercuric Nitrate+Polymyxin B is used in the treatment of Bacterial eye / ear infections.

How chloramphenicol + dexamethasone + phenyl mercuric nitrate + polymyxin b works

This is a combination of three medicines: chloramphenicol, dexamethasone, phenyl mercuric nitrate, and polymyxin B. Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by preventing the synthesis of proteins required by bacteria to carry out their vital functions. Dexamethasone is a steroid. It blocks the production of certain chemicals (prostaglandins) that make the affected area red, swollen and itchy. Phenyl Mercuric Nitrate is an antimicrobial preservative. Polymyxin B is an antibiotic that disrupts the outer cell membrane of certain (gram negative bacteria), and inhibits respiration of bacterial cells.

Expert advice for Chloramphenicol + Dexamethasone + Phenyl Mercuric Nitrate + Polymyxin B

  • Wash your hands first before applying Chloramphenicol + Dexamethasone + Phenyl Mercuric Nitrate + Polymyxin B. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye/ear or any other surface. If it does, squeeze two or three drops straightaway onto some tissue and rinse the tip with salt water.
  • Along with using Chloramphenicol + Dexamethasone + Phenyl Mercuric Nitrate + Polymyxin B, give your eyes/ears a warm compress to relieve itching and other discomforts.
  • Take care to avoid spreading the infection from one eye/ear to the other and other family members. Washing your hands regularly (particularly after touching your eyes/ears) and not sharing towels or pillows will help to prevent the infection from spreading.
  • Do not use the medicine for longer without a doctor consultation.
  • Make sure to use the open bottle for at most four weeks.
