How mesacol enema works

Mesacol Enema is an aminosalicylate. It works directly on the site of inflammation (swelling) in the lower parts of large intestine (colon and rectum) to provide rapid relief from attacks of ulcerative colitis. It suppresses the production of chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause intestinal inflammation, thereby reducing ulceration, bleeding and painful symptoms.

  • It is for administration into the back passage (rectum). It must not be taken by mouth.
  • Your doctor may monitor your kidney and liver functions before you start treatment with this medicine and regularly thereafter. Inform your doctor if you have severely decreased kidney or liver function.
  • Do not use Mesalazine if you are allergic to aspirin or if you have blood disorders.
  • Do not stop using the medication suddenly without talking to your doctor.
