Calcitriol is the active form of vitamin D that binds to vitamin D receptors in the intestine, bone, and kidneys to regulate calcium and phosphate homeostasis. It increases intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate, supports normal bone mineralization, and corrects hypocalcemia. In conditions such as chronic kidney disease, where endogenous calcitriol production is reduced, supplementation helps normalize parathyroid hormone levels and improve metabolic bone abnormalities
