Uses

Mupirocin is used in the treatment of bacterial infections.

How it works

Mupirocin is an antibiotic. It kills the bacteria that cause skin infections by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins necessary for the survival of bacteria. Thus, it prevents the skin infection from spreading.

Rash, Itching, Burning sensation, Stinging sensation, Pain, Nausea, Erythema (skin redness), Dry skin, Tenderness, Swelling, Contact dermatitis, Anaphylactic reaction, Red spots or bumps, Angioedema (swelling of deeper layers of skin)

Metronidazole is used in the treatment of bacterial infections and parasitic infections. It is used in infections of the brain, reproductive system, gastrointestinal tract, skin, vagina, and other areas of the body.

Metronidazole is an antibiotic. It kills the bacteria and other microorganisms that cause infections by damaging their DNA.

  • Mupirocin is used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo.
  • Clean and dry the affected area and apply the medicine at least 3 times a day. A dressing can be applied over the treated area if needed.
  • Avoid getting it in the eyes, mouth or nose. Rinse with cold water if you accidentally get it in these areas.
  • It can cause slight irritation at the application site. Let your doctor know if the irritation does not go away.
  • Do not use for more than 10 days. Throw away any cream that is left over.
  • If your skin condition does not improve within 3 to 5 days, see your doctor.

Mupirocin

Q. Is Mupirocin used for diaper rash?
Mupirocin is an antibacterial medicine and will only help if the diaper rash is due to bacterial infection.
Q. For how long do I need to use Mupirocin?
Use Mupirocin for the duration advised by your doctor. The bacteria are normally cleared from your skin within 10 days of starting the treatment. It is not recommended to use this medicine for more than 10 days. If your skin condition does not improve within 3-5 days, see your doctor.
Q. How should I use Mupirocin?
Follow the directions given by your doctor carefully. Wash your hands before applying Mupirocin. Apply the ointment to the infected area of skin 2-3 times daily or as told by your doctor. You can cover the treated area with a dressing or leave it open as per your doctor’s advice.

Q. Can I apply Mupirocin on an open wound?
Consult your doctor before using Mupirocin on any type of wound. Avoid using Mupirocin for large open wounds if you have a kidney problem as this may further damage your kidneys.
Q. What if I do not get better after using Mupirocin?
Inform your doctor if your symptoms are getting worse while using this medicine. If you do not feel better after finishing the full course of treatment, consult your doctor.
Q. After I applied Mupirocin, I felt burning and stinging sensations. Should I stop using it?
Burning sensation is a common side effect of applying Mupirocin. However, stinging is uncommon. These side effects do not last long and will disappear after sometime. Do not stop using Mupirocin because of these mild side effects. If you have any concerns consult your doctor.
Q. In which areas of the skin should I avoid using Mupirocin?
Mupirocin should not be used to treat infections in or near the eyes, nostrils or mouth. If this medicine accidentally enters your eyes, wash the eyes thoroughly with water. In case you have tubes inserted in your body for the administration or removal of fluid (cannula), do not use this medicine to treat the skin near that area. Additionally, do not use it in combination with a cannula.
Q. What should prompt me to stop using Mupirocin?
Wash off the ointment immediately if you faint, get a raised and itchy rash, cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, difficulty breathing and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat or other parts of the body. These may be signs of a severe allergic reaction. You should immediately stop using Mupirocin and consult your doctor. Though unlikely, but if you get abdominal cramps and diarrhea, you should stop using Mupirocin immediately and consult your doctor.

Metronidazole

Q. How long does Metronidazole take to work?
Usually, Metronidazole starts working within 1 hour of its ingestion. However, it may take around 2-3 days to make you feel better while taking Metronidazole. If you do not experience any significant reduction in your symptoms, consult your doctor.
Q. Can I drink alcohol while using Metronidazole?
No, avoid drinking alcohol while taking Metronidazole. Moreover, you should avoid alcohol even after 3 days of finishing the complete course. Drinking alcohol can cause an unpleasant reaction (disulfiram like reaction) with symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, flushing or redness of the face.
Q. Can the use of Metronidazole cause metallic taste?
Yes, Metronidazole may cause a temporary metallic taste. This metallic taste can be reduced by staying hydrated, brushing teeth after the meals and chewing sugar-free gum or mints.

Q. What if I take more than the recommended dose of Metronidazole?
If you have taken Metronidazole in excess (more than the recommended dose), immediately contact your doctor or report to the nearest hospital. Overdose of Metronidazole may cause loss of appetite, metallic taste, headache, dizziness, insomnia or drowsiness.
Q. Can I stop taking Metronidazole when I feel better?
No, do not stop taking Metronidazole and complete the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cured. Hence, if you stop taking the medicine before completing the course, your infection may come back. Consult your doctor before you stop taking Metronidazole and follow their advice.
Q. What if there is no improvement after using Metronidazole?
Inform your doctor if you did not feel better after completing the full course of treatment. Also, inform him/her if your symptoms are getting worse during the treatment.
